Kirby Beats on Both Top and Bottom Lines

Kirby (NYS: KEX) reported earnings on April 25. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended March 31 (Q1), Kirby beat expectations on revenues and beat expectations on earnings per share.
Compared with the prior-year quarter, revenue expanded significantly and GAAP earnings per share grew significantly.
Margins dropped across the board.
Kirby recorded revenue of $566.9 million. The eight analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated a top line of $537.4 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 89% higher than the prior-year quarter's $299.4 million.

EPS came in at $0.99. The 11 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ anticipated $0.91 per share. GAAP EPS of $0.91 for Q1 were 52% higher than the prior-year quarter's $0.60 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 32.2%, 580 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 15.7%, 290 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 9.0%, 180 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $567.9 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.01.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $2.27 billion. The average EPS estimate is $4.06.
The stock has a four-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 181 members out of 190 rating the stock outperform, and nine members rating it underperform.
