Hosiery isn't the kind of thing that's meant to last, but buying new pairs of pantyhose can add up over time. The key to saving on hosiery is extending its life, and we have a few great ways you can achieve that.

Start with buying the right type. Steer clear of nylon, and go for pairs that are at least 15 percent Lycra or spandex -- they're the most durable.

Runs are the ultimate enemy when it comes to hosiery. Everyone knows the old clear nail polish trick, but that only keeps existing runs from getting worse. The best way to get the most out of your stockings is to prevent those pesky tears from happening. How do you do that? Try freezing your pantyhose. Sure, it sounds weird, but it works.

Simply run your new hosiery under the faucet, place in a freezer bag and ... freeze! Freezing actually strengthens the fibers, allowing the material to last more than a couple of wears. After 24 hours, remove the pantyhose from the freezer and let it thaw naturally. With just a little bit of effort, they'll come out stronger.

hoiseryNow that you know how to prolong the life of your hosiery, you can, in a way, get your damaged stockings to last, too. Instead of throwing them in the trash, donate them to a recycling program like the one No Nonsense has started. Your old pantyhose (of any color or brand) can be reused to make park benches, playground equipment, carpets, ropes and even toys. Talk about making your hosiery last for a lifetime!

My husband and father-in-law used to make fun of me keeping my nylons in the freezer. My father-in-law worked in the textile business so, he should have know this trick. BUT, I could have cared less because they always lasted longer.

I don't freeze my nylons (yes--NYLONS), and mine last usually more than a year. I simply put them into a mesh bag and wash right along with my normal light colored clothes in cold water, then toss the bag into the dryer. I have nylons in my drawer now that I've had for 2-3 years.

I agree with Cricket. I dn't have room in my freezer for hosiery. I use a hosiery bag also and mst of my pantyhose last a long time. I unually put holes in the toe, so I cut off the eet and use them in the summer when I whear sandals.

I agree Granny - when pantyhose first came out, a saleslady told me the freezer trick.

this is nothing new. I was freezing my hosiery in the 1950's, before there was pantyhose.

Extending the Life of Your Hosiery:

when you pull it over your face and back off, make sure you are not wearing piercings on the face or brow.

I would rather be sentenced to the state penitentiary than wear a pair of pantyhose.

You are right and it's been since the 80's that women even wear them.

My wife was a Circle K manager, like a 7-11 and I remember having to help inventory L'GGS, before handheld scanning lazers you know, and restocking them in the 80's and part of the 90's. HOW TIRESOME! The panty hose ,market died during the Clinton administration. Is there a connection? LOL
