Savings Experiment: Save on Pet Food

Your pets are like family, but are you seriously overspending when it comes to their food? Here are some tips to consider when picking your pet's nutrition.

Avoid Filler Foods

Early this year Petco created a new "Certified Nutrition" program that divides pet foods into three categories -- essential foods, natural foods, and advanced foods. Each of these groups fulfills a different requirement: essential foods include basic fillers like wheat or corn, while natural foods contain many familiar ingredients like meat, fruits and vegetables. Advanced foods, finally, are formulated for pets with special medical needs.

According to Petco dog trainer Somers Pierre, natural food brands like Wellness, Halo or Natural Balance are the best choice because they promote health and longevity for your pet. On the other hand, they cost a little more than the basic kibble with fillers. For example, a 30-pound bag of a filler-based essential brand like Beneful costs between $26 and $35, while a natural brand like Wellness costs between $46 and $54.

Pet expert Arden Moore emphasizes nutrition: "It is vital these days that the very first ingredient is a real protein -- not meat byproducts and definitely not wheat or corn," she says. "If you get high-quality, nutritional food, you're going to have fewer pet bills, and your pet is going to live a longer healthier life."

You can save on natural food by purchasing a less-known brand like AvoDerm. On average, that will save you about $10 to $15 per bag.

Pierre points out another great benefit of natural food: Your pet will eat a smaller quantity of it. This helps cut down on your bill as well as your pet's risk for obesity.

Shop at Pet Supply Stores

Consumer Reports found that stores like Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT) had better prices than Petco, Petsmart (PETM), or online retailers like petfooddirect.com. However, you won't find natural food brands at general merchandise retailers. Stick with pet supply stores like Petco, which also offer price matching if you find the product cheaper at another store.

Petco has a points program that provides discounts to returning customers. And, if you buy 10 bags of food within a year, you'll get the next one free. There's even a Pet Birthday Club, which sends yearly discounts to celebrate your pet's special day.

Stock Up Safely

You may be tempted to stock up on pet food during a great sale, but Moore recommends you don't buy more than a month's supply at a time. "Don't go crazy and stockpile," she says. " You can buy a lot, but unless you have an airtight container, that food can become stale and not be as nutritious and cause stomach upsets."

She also recommends supplementing dog food with leftover veggies from your dinner -- your dog will get extra nutrition and you won't have to feed him as much kibble.

So in the end, you'll have to pay more for natural food, but you'll be providing your pet with necessary nutrients. And in the long run, you'll have a healthier pet and lower veterinary bills.

Paying $15 more for a healthy pet food is totally worth it. My family didn't know Purina Puppy Chow was bad when they first grabbed it. It was until I did my research that I found out you can't feed your dogs junk. Those big brand foods give them the parts of the animal that no one in their right mind would eat and then add other fillers. Natural foods at least throw in some of the good stuff.

Now my maltese is perfect weight, height, and health. He might be the healthiest member of our family.

Not only do dogs poop less on natural brands, they also eat less because the food is more nutrient-dense. It took me awhile to realize this but it makes sense. Some brands are over-priced but I have had the best results with one of the more reasonably priced brands, Natural Balance. Both my dogs and cats get the Ultra formulas. They love the taste and are all beautiful and healthy!

They not only eat less with the natural food, the poop less! Always a bonus. Costco has also started carrying their own Kirkland brand of natural food for dogs and cats. It's far cheaper than the name brand and our picky feline eater took to it immediately.

My 80-lb dog has been on California Natural for three years now. He has a corn allergy, and can't be on the food with fillers, like Iams, Pedigree, Beneful, et cetera. I used to work at a vet clinic, and the clinic got kick backs for recommending Science Diet to their clients--Science Diet isn't even a decent food.
Another great thing about the natural foods is, you might pay more but you feed LESS. My dog gets 2 1/2 cups a day because there are no fillers in it, versus 4 cups a day when he was on Purina.

I feed my Norwich and my 2 cats Buffalo Blue - it's pricy, but no fillers and make right here in the USA. I would never buy food for my pets that is made in China. Don't be fooled by wording such as "distributed by" - you don't know where it came from.

Just wanted to inform everybody that avocado is actually toxic to dogs and can lead to diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, so avocado would be and is a terrible ingredient for any dog food. If you don't believe me look it up. I agree with all of the other information in this article and feed my dogs only the best food and have them on a grain free high protein diet and my vet bills have gone down and my dogs are very healthy and happy. Just wanted to make sure that everyone does their homework on what they give their precious pups so that they all can live the happiest and healthiest lives possible and remember just because it is in a dog food or says it is natural or good for them doesn't mean it is. Also remember that just because something is good for us humans doesn't mean it is good for our pups. I love grapes, onions and avocado but all of these things could kill or make my pups seriously ill in the right quantities so just be careful people and look up the list of things and foods that are toxic to dogs if you are unsure. Wishing everyone and your pets long and healthy lives :)

Avocado oil is safe and so is the meat. The pit, skin and leaves are to be avoided as they are the harmful parts. Even the picky ASPCA hasn't ever heard of any problems with avocado in food. One just needs to be careful to make sure it is meat only. I do agree that people should be aware of foods that poison our dogs and cats, though. By the way,Avoderm dog food has been around a long time and has contained avocado in it. If it was harmful to dogs, you can be sure that after all this time they would have removed it from their food because of complaints.

I have to go with the cheaper food for my australian shepard/ black lab mix. She has to be on a low protein diet and the only dog food that I have found that is low is purina dog chow and purina healthy morsels. Myself and one of the employees of pet smart read every single bag of dog food. He could not beleive how much moor protien was in the more expensive bags of food. So if your dog is on a special diet check the lables before you buy the next bag of food.

I have been using Avoderm with my dog for several months now. I started him on it when I adopted him in December and he was severely malnourished and missing quite a bit of hair. He is now up to the proper weight only several months after starting to use Avoderm and has regrown sooo much of his hair. My short-haired abused mutt is now fluffy, happy, and healthy! Highly recommend the Avoderm. :-)
