Toyota Recalls 308,000 RAV4s and Highlanders Due to Airbag Problem

Toyota announced today that it will recall nearly 308,000 RAV4s and Highlander modelsToyota recalled 308,000 RAV4s and Highlander models because, under certain conditions, the side curtain airbags can deploy, the company said.

About 214,000 RAV4s and 94,000 Highlanders are affected by the recall, which will replace the airbag sensor assembly. Toyota said certain 2007 and 2008 RAV4s and certain 2008 Highlander and Highlander HVs have a roll-sensing curtain airbag system that has two sensors designed to detect the vehicle's roll angle.

If one of the sensors fails, the airbag warning light will come on and the roll-detection system will turn off, but the airbag will still function during a side collision. However, if both sensors fail simultaneously after the first airbag system check, the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could be deployed. If your car is one of the ones being recalled, you will get a letter in May from Toyota alerting you to the recall, Toyota stated. Consumers can also type their car's vehicle identification number (VIN) into Toyota's recall site to see which recalls impact a particular vehicle. You can also call the Toyota Customer Experience Center at (800) 331-4331.

Toyota's once-sterling reputation has been tarnished over the past few years with massive safety recalls and complaints about sudden acceleration problems with its vehicles. In December, a study by the research firm J.D. Power and Associates showed more car shoppers were staying away from Toyota cars because of the recalls and the resulting bad publicity.
