Expect to open your wallets and your mouth wide for the coolest royal wedding souvenir: William and Kate Pez dispensers, now being auctioned off on eBay for charity.
Riff-raff need not apply. Bidders must be pre-qualified and the current bid is already above $10,000. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Starlight Children's Foundation, which grants wishes for terminally ill children and provides hospital entertainment for them in the United Kingdom.
The iconic candy company is headquartered in the U.S. and says this one-of-a-kind pair won't be mass produced. Predictions are that the set, commemorating the April 29 wedding of the century, might break price records for a Pez dispenser. For Pez dispenser collectors -- yes they exist in force -- the news is bittersweet, not unlike the candy itself.
"Any publicity about Pez is good because it brings more people into the hobby," said Richard Belyski of Myrtle Beach, S.C., editor of Pez Collector's News. But the limited production will leave many disappointed. Plus the Pez collectors could lose out to the royals collectors.
The highest price ever fetched for a Pez dispenser was $32,000 for the "Astronaut B" dispenser in 2006, said the company.
"This wholly original item will [symbolize] appreciation for our extensive community of collectors as well as serving a charitable purpose. The 'eBay for Charity' auction enables us to achieve both these aims," said Pez marketing chief Gabriele Hofinger, in a release.
