Candy Maker Recalls 'Toxic Waste Short Circuits' Gum for Lead Content

For the third time in as many months, Candy Dynamics of Indianapolis issued a recall of some of its super-sour candy because it could contain high levels of lead. This time a single lot of Toxic Waste Short Circuits Bubble Gum -- which the company doesn't make, but imports from a candy maker in Pakistan -- has been recalled, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The FDA said so far no one has been reported sick from the gum, which samples showed contained lead levels of 0.189 parts per million -- almost twice the legal limit of 0.1 parts per million. Lead can be toxic to small children, creating a range of health issues, and it can cause problems in pregnant women as well.Included in the recall is Toxic Waste Short Circuits Bubble Gum in the 3.2-ounce bag, lot number 15070SC12 with a UPC Code of 0 89894 31001. The recalled bubble gum was sold nationwide through stores and mail orders. It was also sold in small amounts in Canada and Switzerland.

Consumers with the gum should call Candy Dynamics' Eileen O'Neal at (317) 228-5012 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time for refund instructions.

In January Candy Dynamics recalled its Toxic Waste Nuclear Sludge candy, also for high levels of lead. The company then expanded its recall of that candy and announced it was no longer selling it in the United States. In the bubble gum recall notice issued through the FDA, the company said it plans to still sell Short Circuits Bubble Gum and only the single lot was affected by the recall.

Lead -- used in some inks for wrappers -- can get into candy that hasn't been properly prepared, said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
