Vitalabs Recalls Whey-26 Protein Powder Over Salmonella Fears

recalled whey protein product - vitalabsVitalabs Inc. recalled certain lots of its Whey-26 Protein Powder sold under 22 brands because it may be contaminated with salmonella, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

So far, no one has gotten sick from eating the powder usually used in protein shakes and smoothies as a diet supplement. Vitalabs said the recall was prompted by another recall from its supplier of whey protein used in the powder and there have been no tests showing salmonella contamination connected to Vitalabs powder.Salmonella can cause a potentially fatal infection in the very young, the elderly or those with a weakened immune system. Even normally healthy consumers can suffer from fever, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain.

Brands affected by the recall include Dr. Bill's, HCG Buy Direct, The Healthy Way, Innovative Nutra Labs Nutrapure, Iron Mag Labs, Len Rossi's, Nature's Pantry, Nutrition World, Peachtree Natural Foods, Trainer's Choice, Vitalabs and SouthFit Supplements. The FDA lists all of the brands and products included in the recall with their UPC codes.

The protein powder -- in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry flavors -- was sold online and in health food stores, clinics and fitness centers in 22 states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington. The powder also was sold in Aruba, Ontario and Poland.

Consumers can return the product for a refund. Call Vitalabs at (800) 241-3017 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

In December, the FDA warned dietary supplement makers to avoid making deceptive claims about the health benefits of their products.
