London Health Officials Sour on Breast Milk Ice Cream

Breast Milk Ice CreamIn London, some big babies are crying foul over banned milk, specifically, the decision by Westminister's Health Protection Agency and Food Standards Agency to halt sales of "Baby Gaga" breast-milk-based ice cream to the public.

Although the agency told London-based BBC, "We will support small businesses and applaud innovative ideas wherever possible," the controversial ice cream was pulled from the menu at the trendy The Icecreamist shop following two consumer complaints. The Westminster Council reports it will test the product to ensure it is fit for "human consumption." Hmmm. Wonder what they'd find if they tested those little jars of stewed prunes we all ate as babies ...

Icecreamist founder and breast-milk visionary, Matt O'Connor, insists giving Baby Gaga a "time out" is unwarranted. O'Connor told the BBC the breast milk had been medically screened and the milk was pasteurized.

The Tory Westminster Councilor Brian Connell responded, "Selling foodstuffs made from another person's bodily fluids can lead to viruses being passed on, and in this case, potentially hepatitis."

In spite of a steep price tag ($23 per scoop), the shop quickly sold out of the first batch and according to O'Connor had fans and donors alike lining up for more. "We have had an amazing response," he told the BBC, "many women have come forward and offered to give us milk."

In fact, in a related story on WalletPop it turns out there is no shortage of lactating ladies ready, willing and able to share their milk for a good or tasty cause.

Self-proclaimed, ice cream "revolutionaries," the creators of Baby Gaga invite customers to "Lick their addiction" to the sweet stuff in a shop described as a "rehab room and treatment program." Luxury department store, Selfridges calls The Icecreamist offerings, "More Sid and Nancy than Ben & Jerry."

Some of us do have a bit of a thing with ice cream. The question is how far are we willing to go?

"You can buy alcohol and tobacco but not breast milk in Westminster," said a petulant O'Connor. Pick your poison.
