Safeway Recalls Salad, Vegetable Trays; Broccoli May Be Tainted

safeway recall broccoliSafeway recalled broccoli salad, pasta salad and pre-packed vegetable trays that it sold in 12 states because broccoli in those items may be tainted with listeria, the company said.

The Safeway-brand products were made using fresh broccoli from California's Taylor Farms Pacific and sold in the deli departments of Safeway, Vons, Pavilions and Pak N' Save stores in Arizona, Southern California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Southern Nevada, New Mexico, South Dakota, Washington state, Wyoming and Milton-Freewater, Ore., Safeway said. The broccoli also was used in a variety of vegetable trays and ready-to-eat products sold at grocers, including the Raley's stores, which has locations in California and Nevada. Taylor Farms Pacific lists all the products included in the recall in a release through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

So far, no one has become sick from eating the broccoli, the FDA said. The recall started after a random sample tested by the Washington Department of Agriculture came back positive for listeria monocytogenes contamination. Listeria can cause a potentially serious infection in young children, pregnant woman and those with weakened immune systems.

All of the products affected by the recall have "use by" dates of Feb. 7, 2011, to March 7, 2011. In the recall are Safeway products including its Signature Cafe Veggie Pleaser Tray, Signature Cafe Mediterranean Snacker Tray, Deli Broccoli Salad, Deli Signature Cafe Broccoli Bowl and Deli Italian Pasta Salad. Safeway lists the UPC codes for the recalled products.

Consumers should return the products to their local Safeway store for a refund. Customers with questions can call Safeway at (800) 723-3929. The national supermarket chain came under fire recently from consumers in California and Montana, who have sued Safeway for not adequately informing consumers about recalls.

Consumers can also call Taylor Farms Pacific at (209) 835-6300 weekdays between 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern Time or Raley's at (800) 925-9989.
