Sobakawa Cloud Pillow says it's based on traditional Asian buckwheat pillows. But instead of laying your head upon natural buckwheat, you're lying on 10 million "air beads," a euphemism for polystyrene dots.
Sleeping on the Sobakawa Cloud didn't change my life, or my slumber. At first it felt comfy, light. But I couldn't get any height with it and was sleeping almost flat -- very uncomfortable for me.
The Sobakawa isn't as soft as my good down pillows. And it doesn't support my neck as well as my firm Tempur-Pedic pillow.
I love a cold pillow, and I hoped that the Sobakawa Cloud would stay cool, as promised. But it didn't.
However, the Sobakawa did feel like heaven behind my neck during a long car ride.
The Product: Total Pillow
The Price: $19.99 plus $7.95 shipping and handling. In stores, about $15
The Claims: Changes shape in seconds for perfect support
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 4 out of 5
Total Pillow doesn't claim to be comfortable: It's not. It promises to provide support for the neck and back: It does.
The daisy-shaped pillow is filled with polystyrene beads, and it's covered with a nylon-spandex. Its infomercial says you can bend it into five shapes, though I could torture it into only two.
Twist the Total into a helix, and it supports your lower back when sitting at the computer. Or bend it in half to cradle your neck while riding in the car or watching TV on the sofa.
The Total Pillow is not, however, total. You can't place your head upon it to sleep: It's too hard. And it doesn't relieve the pressure on your lower back when you slip it under your knees at bedtime; not enough height.
But you can stuff the Total Pillow behind almost any part of you to relieve pressure and give support.
The Winner and Pillow Champion?
The Total Pillow, because it's innovative, portable and mostly does what it promises: Changes shape in seconds to provide good -- if not perfect -- support.
