Certain sump pumps sold under the Goulds, Red Jacket and Bell & Gossett brands are being recalled because their power cords can leak water into electrical outlets, creating a shock or electrocution risk, said the pumps' importer. The U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission and ITT Water Techonology Inc. of New York warned consumers not to touch the pumps, any water or the floor around the pumps if the units were installed without a ground fault circuit interrupter, often called a GFI. So far, no consumers have reported being hurt. The CPSC said about 21,000 pumps were installed in homes -- both in new houses and as replacement pumps -- between December 2009 and July 2010. The pumps were sold through Goulds, Red Jacket and Bell & Gossett distributors nationwide for between $280 and $700. The pump itself was made in the United States and the power cord was manufactured in China.

Sump pumps aren't just used for getting rid of water in the basement after too much rain. If a water pipe burst or a sewer line backed up, those too have the potential to cause real property damage if the basement floods.
