Dollar General to Hire 6,000 for 2011 Expansion

Dollar General to Hire 6,000 for 2011 Expansion Dollar General (DG) announced Monday morning that its 2011 expansion plan to open 625 new stores will allow it to hire 6,000 workers.

The discount retailer said the store openings in new suburban, rural and metropolitan markets would create 6,000 new jobs in local communities. Hiring will be spread throughout its existing 35-state operating area, as well as three new states: Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. The company also plans to remodel or relocate 550 stores.

"Bringing our store model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us," said Chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling. "We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General."

Unlike many other companies that have spent the past several years laying off employees, 2011 will mark Dollar General's third consecutive year of creating, rather than eliminating jobs. If its estimates for this year are accurate, from 2009 though 2011, the company will have created more than 15,000 new jobs.

Dollar General currently has more than 9,200 stores in 35 states, which it says is more retail locations than any other discount retailer in America.

6000 LOW WAGE JOBS......Boy whom ever gets these jobs will be lucky if they can afford to fillup their gas tanks much less anything else. This country has gone to hell and Wall Street is to blame and 1 thing i would like to point out is this.......... The reason for gas going up is because of demand in China and India where 80% of all Americans jobs have gone and good paying jobs at that, my question is this why don't China and India both charge more for gas in there country's if demand is so high there..... The answer is they won't because everybody in both country's ride a bike period. The real blame for gas gone wild is Wall Street to satisfy the investors period......... Can you say a great depression is on the way and one like you never have seen!!!!!!!!!

God bless Dollar General Stores. These jobs will help quite a few people whom really need a job! BUT, a service sector economy is what we have here in America right now as college graduates cannot find jobs in their respective fields, including healthcare! Nurses are supposedly in demand, but these jobs are some of the last high paying jobs left in America and attrition is not opening up jobs for new grads whom have $25,000.00 in school loans to pay back and part time jobs to "live" on. In Europe, youth unemployment is 75%, and college graduates there, like here are 50% unemployed. We are in a devastated world economy right now!

Iam not exactly sure what you mean by entitlement mentality. I have heard that alot of people feel that those collecting Social Security Retirement Benefits are receiving entitlements. I disagree, from June 1964 through March 2009 I had Social Security Tax removed from my paycheck every two weeks. That is a period of 45 years and I had no choice in the matter my employer was required to pay payroll tax under penalty of law. So I consider the Social Security I am now receiving as the Government simply paying me back for the money they took for 45 years.

I am glad quite a few people feel that unions are to blame for everything. Keep in mind if you are of the younger generation you had the nice things you had growing up because your father most likely was in a union. The unions have not had a very big part of the economy for quite a few years now. The United Steel Workers Union of which my father was a member is no longer the union it was the United Auto Workers the same way. Part of the deal of moving overseas was to manufacture products cheaper however has anyone notice the price of clothing or shoes or cosmetics going down because they are being made cheaper????? I have notice them going up so quess who is making a killing on these cheaper made goods the stockholders and the CEO'S of these companies

We became useless to the job market when our elected people okayed moving jobs to
China,India and any other place where 50 cents an hour is big money. Greed has no heart or soul.

If they are 99'rs, by definition, they are NOT receiving unemployment benefits any longer. Ninety-nine weeks and you're out. Usually out of a home too. As a matter of fact, yes they did make almost twice the amount Dollar General pays while they were receiving benefits. That's because almost everyone pays better than Dollar General.

I would think anyone unemployed would be happy for any job. The last time I checked a little money is better then NO money. As far as the selling items from China, have you looked at what other retailers sell. Such as Walmart. Walmart is part of the problem in sending these jobs to China.
