Kroger pet food dog cat recallKroger Co. recalled specific lots of three brands of dog and cat food in 19 states because it could contain aflatoxin, a chemical produced by mold on corn which can be harmful to pets, the company said.

The company said in its recall notice through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that consumers should not let their pets eat the food and should return it to the story for a full refund or replacement. If a pet shows signs of sluggishness, doesn't want to eat, has a yellow tint to its eyes or gums and severe or bloody diarrhea, immediately take the animal to the vet.Aflatoxin was the cause of a rash of dogs sickened and also dog deaths nationwide in late 2005 after the pets ate contaminated food made by Diamond Pet Foods. The company eventually settled a class action lawsuit and agreed to pay $3.1 million to consumers, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.

In Kroger's recall, three brands of pet food are included in the recall -- Pet Pride cat food, Old Yeller dog food and Kroger Value dog food.

The recalled pet chow was also carried by Dillons and Gerbes stores in Kansas and Missouri; Baker's stores in Nebraska; Food 4 Less stores in Nebraska, Illinois and the Chicago area of Indiana; and Jay C, Hilander, Owen's Pay Less and Scott's stores in Illinois and Indiana.

Consumers who have questions about the recall can call Kroger at (800) 632-6900. This year has seen a number of large pet food recalls including some Procter and Gamble's Iams products. The year also saw an increase in the number of pet food recalls because of potential salmonella contamination.

Kroger spokewoman Denise Osterhues told Consumer Ally in an e-mail the company as a precaution notified customers who bought the products between Oct. 23 and Saturday (Dec. 18) about the recall -- but only products with the sell-by dates of Oct. 23 and 24 are affected. She couldn't say how much pet food has been recalled.

"We are in the early stages of our investigation right now, so we don't have any more information to share at this point," Osterhues said. "We continue to work with the appropriate regulatory authorities to look into the matter and to ensure that we are meeting and exceeding all standards."
