Bellagio Robber Escapes with $2 Million in Casino ChipsAn armed man stole up to $1.5 million in casino chips from the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas early Tuesday morning.

The man, who fled on a motorcycle and wore a motorcycle helmet during the incident, robbed the casino hotel at about 4 a.m. Tuesday morning after pulling a gun in the casino-pit area, Las Vegas Police Lt. Clint Nichols said at a press conference Tuesday. No shots were fired and no one was injured during the incident, which took less than three minutes.

About 10 casinos have been robbed in the Las Vegas area this year, compared to about nine last year, according to Nichols, who didn't disclose the value of the other heists. "This is not an epidemic that we've seen Valley-wide," Nichols said, adding that the man likely acted alone.

The heist follows a similar incident on Dec. 9, when a man wearing a motorcycle helmet got away with about $20,000 at the Suncoast casino about 15 miles away from the Bellagio.

The Bellagio, which is owned by MGM Resorts International (MGM), has more than 3,900 rooms and more than 100,000 square feet of gaming areas. The hotel-casino had $269.4 million in third-quarter revenue, MGM Resorts reported last month.

what in the world can a person do with chips? I wouldn't understand because I don't do the tables but I was under the impression that each casino had thier own brand of chips with thier names on them so whoever did this must cash them in at this casino right?

You come back another time and cash them in, or you pay someone to do it. There are lots of chips floating around, so the only chips that may cause a problem are the high denomination ones that have micro-chips in them. Yes, chips have the name of the casino on them, but most casinos will let you PLAY with chips from other casinos. What I mean is I can take chips from Harrah's, then later I may be at say NY. NY, and I sit down at a blackjack table. Instead of pulling out cash and asking for chips to play with, I pull out the Harrah's chips and the dealer will trade me NY, NY chips for the Harrah's chips. The distinction is play, as opposed to cash in. I couldn't just walk in to the NY, NY cashier window and trade in my Harrah's chips. So basically, chips are as good as cash in Vegas. I typically use them to tip waitresses, bell-hops, etc. They are happy with them, because they know all they have to do is cash them in when they get a chance. Hope that helps...
