American Tack & Hardware Co. Inc. (AmerTac) recalled its Forever-Glo Cylinder Nite Lites because they can overheat and cause a fire, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.
AmerTac has gotten nine reports of the lights smoking, burning, melting or charring. No one has been hurt. The electrical circuit can short, risking fire, the CPSC said.Consumers should stop using the lights, unplug them and contact AmerTac for a full refund at (800) 420-7511 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time.
Only model number 71107 with a manufacturer code of SY is included in the recall. The night light is cylinder shaped with a white base and a clear top that plugs into a socket. The model number and manufacturer code is printed on the back of the light.
About 272,000 of the lights imported from China were sold at hardware stores, lighting showrooms and home centers nationwide from May 2009 to September 2010 for about $5 each. The recall notice didn't list specific retailers, but the company lists its products sold in stores including The Home Depot, Lowe's, Walmart, Ace Hardware, Target, Sears, True Value and on Amazon.com.
Another product recently recalled because of the danger of an electrical short was a Meijer ceramic heater.
