Hold that Eggnog. Whole Foods Market recalled packages of its ground nutmeg nationwide because of possible salmonella contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Iowa's Frontier Natural Products Co-op packaged the non-organic nutmeg for Whole Foods brand as well as its own Frontier Bulk brand. Both products, sold nationwide and in parts of Canada, are affected by the recall.So far, no reports of consumers getting sick from eating the nutmeg have been made. Salmonella can cause a potentially life-threatening infection in young children and people with weakened immune systems. Even healthy people can suffer fever, diarrhea, nausea and stomach pain from salmonella infections.
Included in the recall are 1.92-ounce jars of Whole Foods 365 Nutmeg Ground with the UPC code 0-99482-41931-8 and the lot code of 0321, located on the bottom of the bottle. Also in the recall are 16-ounce packages of Frontier Bulk Nutmeg Ground with the UPC code 0-89836-00165-8 and the lot code of 0306.
Nutmeg adds a spicy kick to many dishes and drinks this time of year, including as a topping to eggnog, rice pudding and deviled eggs, but these brands should not be consumed. This is the second recall in less than a week for a Whole Foods Market store brand. Last week Whole Foods added itself to a recall of artisan, raw-milk cheese in five western states after its supplier, Bravo Farms of California, reported listeria and e.coli contamination at its plant. The Bravo Farms cheese -- also sold in Costco stores in that area -- has been linked to an e. coli outbreak that sickened more than two dozen in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and California.
