Sweet could get expensive. Raw sugar prices may rise to the highest level in more than 30 years by March, if dry weather hits the Brazilian sugar crop, broker Newedge USA told Bloomberg News.

Sugar prices have more than doubled since May on concern about output in Brazil, Russia, China and Pakistan.

"If there's less rain than normal in Brazil until March, you could potentially see a reduction in the cane harvest, and then you have a potentially big problem," Michael McDougall, a senior vice president at Newedge, told Bloomberg News.

Also, India may curb its sugar exports as it tries to rebuild its reserves, pushing prices higher. The reserves are currently less than half its preferred level of 10 million metric tons.

"Current prices show that the market needs Indian sugar," McDougall told Bloomberg News.

packard54 Read the article...www/crystalsugar.com/media/archives/w.candy.pdf. You will see that labor associated costs were the reason.

It seems to me that everything is going up. The cost of living, unemployment, gas prices, utilities, fruits & vegtables, meats, poultry, fish, medicines, health services, etc., etc. Yet this administration claims the cost of living has not changed to warrent a COLA for retirees depending on their Social Security or Federal annuity. There was no COLA for 2010, nor one expected for 2011. This is the first time in 35 years that this has happened. I believe this administration has accomplished nothing but putting the United States deeper in debt. The stimulus, bailout, and cash for clunkers was a FARCE. Obamas programs took money from the pockets of working Americans and distributed it to the burnouts of America that never worked a day in their life. All his programs are Robin Hood driven, take from the rich and give to the poor. Remember those who achieved wealth got there through hard work & sweat. These are the people that create business and hire the rest of us. I don't ever recall getting a job from a poor person. I worked 51 years for my retirement and annuity, and yes I don't want the governments hands in my pockets giving my hard earn cash to whom they want. I believe everybodys Stand depends on where he's Sitting. Socialism does not work, wake up America and see the light; we need jobs not more welfare & free handouts.

Once again we are being fed lies! The soaring commodities prices - bacon, wheat, corn, metals and oil - are all the fault of hedge funds who now see commodity price manipulation as their biggest profit center. Wake up everyone. You can help put an end to this hedge fund pockpicking by telling your senator and congressmen to fix the laws so that commodity speculators have to take delivery of commodities they want to speculate in. That would put an instant end to this fleecing of our wallets!!!!

Then why are US taxpayers giving money to US sugar growers. We are broke ( thank you Obama ) If the sugar farmers cannot make it on their own, then switch crops
