Evenflo Maestro booster seat recalled.Evenflo Co. Inc. has recalled almost 14,000 Maestro Combination Booster Seats after safety tests showed the car seats could crack during an accident and not sufficiently restrain a child, increasing the risk of injury, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Evenflo said there have been no injuries or reports of the crack developing during an actual car crash. The recalled booster seats have model numbers beginning with 310 and were built between Nov. 24, 2009 and April 9, 2010. The recall involves car seats in Canada too -- those also have model numbers starting with 310 and were made between Dec. 17, 2009 and April 26, 2010.

To fix the problem, Evenflo will give consumers a repair kit with a bracket to reinforce the seat. The Ohio company said consumers should not put children weighing less than 40 pounds in the seat without a bracket. Children weighing more can still use the seat as booster until the repair bracket is installed.

"Evenflo is very proud of its 85-year record of safety," said Lindsay Harris, Evenflo's vice president of corporate engineering and quality. "Despite our best efforts, sometimes issues arise even after products have been rigorously tested. Evenflo's testing has demonstrated the effectiveness of the reinforcement bracket at levels greatly exceeding the already-severe federal requirements. No other Evenflo car seats have experienced similar damage."

Consumers can call Evenflo for the repair kit at (800) 233-5921 in the United States and (800) 265-0749 in Canada between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern. The company is also contacting registered owners.

Last month, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety listed a different Evenflo car seat among its "worst fitting" car seats list.
