When it comes to yapping dogs, BarkOff claims to be man's best friend ... if only.
BarkOff is supposed to emit an ultrasonic sound that distracts and quiets barking dogs "painlessly and naturally." All I know for sure is that I slipped a 9V battery into the plastic gizmo and flicked the switch to turn it on.
I heard nothing: Humans aren't supposed to.
But when my 6-year-old Bichon Frise howled at the ringing doorbell -- always fun at our house -- I pointed BarkOff at her and ... nothing. Either Rosie didn't hear BarkOff, or didn't care.
Rosie even barked at the BarkOff infomercial, which I played on my computer to make sure I was doing everything correctly.
BarkOff didn't work on my other dog, Betty, either. Or on the neighbor's hound, who provides the looping soundtrack for the block.
BarkOff costs $10, plus $6.99 shipping and handling.
Maybe this thing silences some dogs, somewhere. But it doesn't stop barking "anytime, anywhere," as promised.
Bottom line on BarkOff?
It's $17 out the window. And that's enough to make anyone howl.
