McDonald's Corp (MCD) said that global sales at stores open at least one year rose 4.9% in August, driven by a strong performance in the U.S.

U.S. comparable sales gained 4.6%, thanks to sales of fruit and coffee drinks, McDonald's said in a statement. Comparable sales in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa jumped 7.8% thanks to strong growth in Japan, China and Australia.

"Giving our customers a unique balance of food and beverage choices is driving performance in every area of the world," CEO Jim Skinner said.

European comparable sales rose 2.2%.

the government has destroyed the cigarette business in this country. I own liquor stores and 5 years ago they averaged about 300 cartons of sales a week today that number is closer to 100 cartons. That is hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales a year and many less employees. If the government is so worried about the health of people it is time for them to make sure Macs sales do not continue to grow with very unhealthy food. The state and federal excise tax is about $18 a carton in this state so nows the time to tax lower usage of Macs unhealthy products. No one stood up for smokers so now it should be overweight peoples turn to be discriminated against
