"The Expendables" beat out new releases to hold onto the top box office slot at U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, taking in $16.5 million in ticket sales for Lions Gate Entertainment. The action film, directed by and starring Sylvester Stallone, is in its second week.
"Vampires Suck," which opened on Aug. 18, took econd place. The movie parodies the "Twilight" vampire series and had sales of $12.2 million for Fox, said Hollywood.com Box-Office.
"Eat Pray Love," starring Julia Roberts, came in third, down one spot from last week, with $12 million in sales for Sony. "Lottery Ticket" was fourth with $11.1 million for Warner Bros.
"The Other Guys," with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, fell to fifth place from third with $10.1 million for Sony. "Piranha 3-D" was sixth and "Nanny McPhee Returns" came in seventh.
Weekend sales for the top 12 films fell 2.38 percent to $108.9 million from $111.6 million a year earlier, Hollywood.com said. Year-to-date receipts are $7.35 billion, up 4.3 percent from $7.05 billion. Attendance is down 1.26 percent this year.
