Hewlett-Packard Tops Dell's Bid to Acquire 3Par

Posted 7:47AM 08/23/10 Posted under: Investing, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Stocks in the News
Hewlett-Packard Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) on Monday went head-to-head with rival Dell (DELL) as it said it has submitted a proposal to acquire storage solutions technology company 3PAR (PAR). Exactly a week ago, Dell said it has agreed to buy 3Par.

HP proposed to buy all of the outstanding shares of storage technology company 3Par for $24.00 per share in cash, or an enterprise value of $1.6 billion. The proposed transaction represents a 33.3% premium above the price proposed by Dell, which offered $18 a share in cash valued at a total of $1.15 billion.

HP's proposal is not subject to any financing contingency and has been approved by HP's board of directors, the statement said. HP continued to say that once approved by 3Par's board, HP expects the transaction to close by the end of the calendar year.

"The addition of 3Par's next-generation storage architecture will accelerate HP's winning Converged Infrastructure strategy, which provides customers with an unmatched portfolio of intellectual property across storage, server and networking solutions," HP said.

"HP's proposal offers superior value to 3Par's shareholders. Our global reach, strong routes to market and commitment to innovation uniquely position HP as the ideal fit for 3Par," said Dave Donatelli, general manager, Enterprise Servers, Storage and Networking, HP. "We've seen great momentum with our Converged Infrastructure strategy, and 3Par accelerates that strategy, particularly in cloud and scale-out markets."

HP used to be terrible as they had a bad memory recall more than once on their laptops. I had one of them but when it first started having Windows crash I called HP support and they said it was software. Later it turns out it was hardware as in bad ram. Anyways if I'm spending my hard earned money its going to be Dell. Try googling "HP bad memory recall" and see how many links light up your screen, ha-ha.

Good Lord! PLEASE no more HP products. They'll work out some way to scam their consumers. Like they do with their printers which arrive with HALF filled ink cartridges .... and there are those "chips" hidden in the ink cartridges which are dated, so that even if you never use color, after a few months it will register as empty. Then you have to have BOTH black and color cartridges to run the damned thing. Oh yes .... if you never use color and print a lot of things quickly before that time dated chip kicks in, HP ADDS some color ink to each black print to MAKE SURE it gets used up. Don't believe me? Put a few drops of water onto a black print and see all the PRETTY COLORS. HP is the biggest cheat out there. Cartridges were a huge portion of their profits ..... but now they're trying to branch out ..... obviously people are getting pretty angry and switching to Kodak ..... and other printers which aren't "rigged" are on the way. HP ....shame shame !!!!!

Have had Gateway, HP, Dell and another brand I can not remember. Dell has been best so far. Gateway was OK after I got the company to send it back to factory to get it fixed. The HP broke down soon, and they wanted money to trouble shoot or fix it. Never ever buy another HP. Don't care too much for their printers either! We have owned 4 Dell laptops and one Dell desk top. All have been good comptuters. Only replaced them to upgrade to newer computers.

HP is JUNK! Had a laptop that died 3 days after warrantee ran out and they offered NOTHING. I'm on my second HP printer in 2 years and it's another piece of crap! I wouldn't own another HP product if they GAVE it to me! DELL shouldn't worry about anything but their extremely high prices.

I have both a Compaq(HP) desktop and a Dell laptop. Both of which have served me rather well. The desktop is the oldest of the computers I have, and it has been working fine for over 6 years. My Dell I got back in 2008 from Best Buy.

I have an hp home computer and also got an hp laser jet printer ( my logic being that both products being from Hp I wouldnt have any conflicts) WRONG My printer keeps locking up my computer and I contacted Hp about it and their responce was - that will be $35 for consultaion for phone help. So I figured out a way to by past the problem myself. So the idea I get from this is that they didnt stand behind their product for me because the way I see it from the posts that are on the internet with this problem that its a software problem and they should fix their defect for free because I paid good money and put trust in their product. However they wont fix their faulty product without me paying a service fee. Bad business in my book and I wont do buisness again with them.

The company I worked for before I retired bought 6 new dell computers and within a year 5 of them had the hard drives replaced due to failure. I have a HP of my own that i've had for several years and no problems so far.

I absolutely HATE HP. they burned me twice with computers. Now I only buy either dell or gateway. I wont even have an HP printer in my home, nor to either one of my kids. their service dept is horrible and they lie. the 2nd computer I had from them was still under warranty and I also bought a service plan. they said that the problem was not covered. I sent it in and they didnt fix it. sent it in again and they had it for 6 months and it still wasnt fixed. to make this long story a little shorter. I was supposed to be sent a new tower. the new tower was SOMEONES OLD REFURBISHED piece of junk. ended up selling it for parts at a great loss. got a Gateway after that and told HP. they got nice after that but it was to late. Dont buy HP.

Gateway is the absolute worse computer company. I had a Gateway and had nothing but problems with it from the very beginning. They replaced several boards on it, even went so far as to send it back to the company, they never got it to work and they wouldnt just replace the whole computer. They did end up replacing it piece by piece. I'm sure it cost the company MUCH more than I paid orginally, trouble is it never worked. Alice

I am very happy with my Dell and would buy another, but the problem is, I belive Dell is on the way out and that basically just leaves HP.
