It's a Tea Party at the Newsstand as Conservative and Gun Magazines Grow

conservative publications growThe citizens of Red State America are hopping mad, and they're doing something about it: buying magazines. Among the fastest-growing publications in the first half of 2010 were a slew of titles for gun lovers, hunters, conservatives and NASCAR fans, according to figures just released by the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

They include Newsmax, the right-wing title whose publisher recently made an unsuccessful bid to buy Newsweek, which was up 92.6% in circulation, with an average of 181,985 readers; NASCAR Illustrated, up 33.7% to 123,603; and America's 1st Freedom, a publication of the National Rifle Association, which was up 22.6% to 606,669. American Rifleman, American Hunter and North American Hunter all also made the list of the 25 fastest-growing titles, as did All You, the Time Inc. (TWX) women's magazine that's only sold at Walmart (WMT) stores.

But if all those Sarah Palin supporters stopped to scope out their fellow newsstand shoppers, they might have noticed an awful lot of people wearing Birkenstocks and carrying hemp tote bags. Readership of Clean Eating, a natural-food magazine from Robert Kennedy Publishing, was up 44.4%, Organic Gardening grew 25.8% and Vegetarian Times was up 7.8%.

The fastest-growing publication of all was also a food magazine: Food & Family, which increased its circulation an eye-popping 650%, to 1.08 million. But that growth is somewhat misleading: Kraft Foods (KFT), which publishes the title, only started charging for it last year, allowing it to claim copies it was already distributing as paid circulation for the first time.

Overall, the industry-wide trend was down for both subscriptions and single-copy (ie., newsstand) sales, although somewhat less steeply than it has been in recent years. Aggregate single-copy sales declined 5.63%, while aggregate subscription sales fell 1.96%.

I long to view more dialog from liberal republicans(if there are any), with conservative democrats (ditto). Let's stick to real facts and leave hateful commentary out. I will say that that the Bill O'Reilly posting was hilarious!

Good God! I jsut read over these comments. Is anyone ouot there with a rational brain looking at this? I see conservatives or uncommitteds making rational comments or trying to respond to other comments. From self proclaimed "liberals" all I see is EXTREME hatred. It is like something from the Nazi party in the 1920's. Am I the only person reading this? There is no, zero, tolerance for anyone with a different idea or who does not bow down and kiss their butt. Look at some of these. If someone dares to make a response or utter one word opposed to a liberal comment that person is attacked in an unbelievably vile manner. I suppose "tolerance" and "freedom of speech" only apply to what is approved and politically correct. Where is this nation heading when one side will not even listen in a civilized manner to the other?

Very misleading. Alot of traditional "liberal" publications have suddenly found themselves in the "conservative" limelight. The entire "back to the land" movement, and its publications, used to be very liberal and now is almost entirely a conservative thing due to increasing alienation of its participants by liberal leadership and an increasing appeal to conservatives who believe our society is heading towards a major collapse under liberal policy. Thus, a load of traditionally liberal publications, such as "Mother Earth News" are now heavily followed by staunch conservatives. Indeed the magazine has taken a very conservative tempo as are many others. This is also true in other traditional liberal fields which are increasingly finding themselves pushed out by the new liberal extremism.

Newsweek and MSNBC were my favorite national news outlets several years ago. Don't know what happened to turn them into the liberal leg humpers they are today but you can't get the other side of the story there anymore. CNN and ABC are little better. I'm in my LAST round of Newsweek now and been choking on it for quite some time. They go into recycling pretty quick.

We liberals will have to buy guns to protect ourselves from the crazy tea baggers.

Bill - remember liberals want to ban guns. And they believe the First Amendment only applies to them and the Second Amendment is the only amendment that is a collective right, the rest are individual rights.

Like you saw us LAST November? Or the two before that? You'll see us alright, Ubersturmbannfuhrer, and we'll see you - from a distance, your pointy heads, red noses and suspiciously intimate first cousins clinging, visibly, from a great distance....

Mr. Bercovici, show me where you have ever described anyone or anything, including yourself, as "left wing", or had anything good to say about conservative values, and I will try to pretend that you are not a garden variety liberal word *****.

We told you so.....way back. We're still here(Conservatives), and we ain't leaving! We don't like the tune being played and we won't dance to it. That means we're not marching in any Gay Pride, Gay Marriage parades. Socialism to us is a four-letter-word. Get your hand out of our pockets and off off our kid's school books. We don't mind competing with minorities, just as long as they don't get a head start. Come on over....but do it LEGALLY! Uh, no thanks, we don't smoke grass. We wer'nt at Woodstock, but we know what Hippies were like and we don't want them writing our laws today (they grew up and went to Congress you know). We not only support our troops, we believe in what they are trying to do...kill Muslim terrorists. God bless America....no, I really MEAN that!

I agree completely that this article was placed to attract attention (comments) and not to provide information. A very low standard for journalism!

I would like to see some real investigative journalism that will ask about the gun sales that are really making the gun manufacturers rich. I believe that the majority of the guns sold in the US are being carted down to Mexico to fuel the killing by drug lords. Is anyone watching the borders for trucks loaded with guns leaving the US?
