Employers Shed 131,000 Jobs in July

unemploymentPrivate employers added new workers at a weak pace for the third straight month, making it more likely economic growth will slow in the coming months. The jobless rate was unchanged at 9.5 percent.

The Labor Department said Friday that companies added a net total of 71,000 jobs in July, far below the roughly 200,000 needed each month to reduce the unemployment rate.

Overall, the economy lost a net total of 131,000 jobs last month, but that was mostly because 143,000 temporary census jobs ended.

Stock futures fell after the report's release. Futures for the Dow Jones industrial average were up 30 points before the announcement, but are now down 70 points.

The department also said that businesses hired fewer workers in June than it had previously estimated. June's private-sector job gains were revised down to 31,000 from 83,000. May was revised up slightly to show 51,000 net new jobs, from 33,000.

The "underemployment" rate was the same as in June, at 16.5 percent. That includes those working part time who would prefer full-time work and unemployed workers who've given up on their job hunts.

All told, there were 14.6 million people looking for work in July. That's roughly double the figure in December 2007, when the recession began.

Even if hiring picks up, it will take years to regain all the jobs lost during the recession. The economy lost 8.4 million jobs in 2008 and 2009. This year, private employers have added only 559,000 jobs.

Friday's report is being closely watched by the Federal Reserve as it considers ways to energize the recovery. The report will likely put pressure on the Fed to take new steps to boost the economy and keep interest rates at record lows when it meets next week.

Without more jobs, consumers won't see the gains in income needed to encourage them to spend more and support economic activity. Even those with jobs may not feel confident enough to ramp up their spending.

That's important because many of the trends driving economic growth earlier in the recovery are fading. Companies boosted production in the winter and spring to rebuild inventories that were depleted in the recession. But that boost is fading. And the impact of the federal government's stimulus package is also declining.

The economy grew at 5 percent in the fourth quarter last year and 3.7 percent in the first three months of 2010. But that slowed to 2.4 percent in the April-June period. That's not fast enough to generate jobs and reduce the unemployment rate.

Many companies appear to be getting more out of their current employees rather than adding new staff. The average work week increased by one-tenth of an hour to 34.2 hours, the department said. That's up from about 33 hours in the depths of the recession.

Gee, private sector jobs aren't increasing? How surprised is anyone with that? All our elected officials do is keep raising our taxes and spending like crazy. Who in their right minds will HIRE more workers??? Then there's always the "tax on private health insurance". Don't even get me talking about that! It's time to stop the insanity and elect responsible people who will STOP taxing and spending us into the stone age!!!

    Censorship……………….

AOL respects the individuality and creativity of all its members… oh man, I almost kept a straight face while saying it, I'm sorry, I just couldn't do it.
In reality, AOL has teams of dweebs and dorks that monitor everything you try to express, whether in email, chat rooms or discussion groups, and we've empowered these zit-faced, sub-than-minimum wage* spazoids with total censorship control over everything you plop down through the outhouse of your keyboard.
What did you think; you have some "right to privacy" or "reasonable expectation of confidentiality"? Grow up! We've got an empire here, and the emperor doesn't need any rabble-rousing free thinkers spreading subterfuge amongst the populace. If you had the capacity to think for yourselves you wouldn't be here in the first place. Now get back in line and tell your friends to sign up for AOL today. ………Censored-ly Yours, tjdwill

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party.(and of all but 12 of the last 46 years)They controlled the budget process for Fiscal Year 2008 and Fiscal Year 2009, as well as Fiscal Year 2010 and Fiscal Year 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases. For Fiscal Year 2009, though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid by passed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the Fiscal Year 2009 budgets.
And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete Fiscal Year 2009.
If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, HE inherited it from himself. In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is HE inherited a deficit that HE voted for and then HE voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

"By the time George W. Bush was inaugurated in 2001, the National Debt stood at $5.7-trillion. He ran up more debt faster than nearly all of his predecessors combined: just under $4.9-trillion".

The United States Corporations can freely do business all over the world beholden to only themselves and their investors avoiding taxes and support to the country they developed their business. The Chinese Big Businesses are beholden to their government even though they pretend to be free enterprise. Which government will be better off for its people from their business dealings ? In other words our Corporations are running the show manipulating politicians to get their ways and avoid what the rest of us have to support; our country. This is a huge reason our country is falling short in all aspects of our governments dealings. The Post Office and Social Security are on the cusp of red ink. The average person is being squeezed into poverty or if successful wealth with the first scenario being a much higher percentage. I believe our country has chosen the social root because business can't employ everyone or they will not have the lavish record profits. Democrats nor Republicans can do anything about it since it is the Corporations who are really driving this economy and until the people demand a more responsible way of employment for its people we will continue to slip in our economic growth. Thanks to the "Zeig Heil" NEW WORLD ORDER. To take our country back is to demand business to respect its workers like it did in the fifties and sixties so the middle class can again support our the business of our government or our free way of life will lose out to a government controlled way of life such as China's.

Hard to believe that the Bush mismanagement and ensuing recession is still hammering away at the economy -- he will, without doubt, go down as the worst president in the history of the US. He took over when the economy was flush, cash surplus in hand -- left 8 years later, major recession, $5 trillion added to the debt, huge budget deficits, economy in shamples. At least the stock market is up over 30% since Obama was sworn in...

Lets face it, between the tech revolution (computers),and the out sourcing of well paying manufacturing jobs, that will NEVER be seen again, we can expect a permanent loss of the standard of living that was the middle class! Just look to Japan, with the stagnation of their economy leading to loss of jobs and a downgrade of their status as the leading Asian economy, and you will see what is in store for the US. Perhaps, we could still handle the worlds money with the investment banks that we bailed out with taxpayer money, thereby showing the world how "safe" they are, but the rest of working America will have to be content with working the WalMarts, and HomeDepots, selling the goods now made out of the country, for a wage that will not allow them to BUY anything! It does,nt look good!
