Apple (AAPL) is reportedly in talks to acquire China-based online game and social-networking developer HandSeeing Information Technology, according to a Reuters report. If finalized, the deal would mark the U.S. computer maker's first acquisition in that country. A HandSeeing executive noted he expects a decision will be made within another month or two.
Software maker HandSeeing operates high-end applications that can be used for developing online games, graphics and set-top box social networking. HandSeeing is also a key technology partner for China's largest social networking community, Tianya, its largest chess platform, Lianzhong, and the country's first game-themed amusement park, Joyland.
The acquisition would allow Apple to access China's local talent to develop technology, going beyond its reliance on the country as a manufacturing base for its products.
