In an accident sure to strike fear in vacationers worldwide, a 15-year-old girl was killed and 2 other seriously injured after an amusement park ride in Barcelona, Spain broke in mid-air.
The names of the victims have not been released. The mechanical arm of "El Pendulo" (The Pendulum) broke at the Tibidabo amusement park, which is owned by the Barcelona City Council. A basket carrying the 3 victims fell on top of another ride.
The park's website says El Pendulo is "the ultimate free fall and the first of its kind in Spain." The ride's long arm takes passengers up to 124 ft and drops them into a free fall that reaches 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The ride has been open for 4 years.
Around 80 serious injuries, or ones that required an overnight stay in a hospital, were reported in 2008 in U.S. amusement parks, according to the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions.
