Pottery Barn Kids crib recallPottery Barn Kids has issued a recall for every drop-side crib sold by the retailer over the past 11 years, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Deadly drop-side cribs, blamed for as many as 46 deaths since 2001, have been the subject of a recent spate of recalls -- including seven just last month. Coincidentally, just hours before the Pottery Barn recall was announced, the CPSC voted unanimously to establish new standards for cribs that would ban the drop-side style in the United States.

While the Pottery Barn cribs that are being recalled have not been blamed for any deaths, they have been involved in 36 incidents reported to either the company or the CPSC, including seven involving injuries and one child who was trapped between the mattress and drop-side, the CPSC said.
Over the years it has become apparent that drop-side cribs, once the industry standard, don't hold up well over time. The hardware weakens (or isn't installed properly) and can lead to gaps forming alongside the sleeping area that can cause an infant or toddler to strangle or suffocate.

Pottery Barn, a division of Williams-Sonoma, said about 82,000 cribs are involved in the recall. The company will be giving away a kit to immobilize the drop-side of the crib to resolve the problem.

The cribs were sold by Pottery Barn -- in stores, its web site and its catalog -- from January 1999 through March of this year for $300 to $600.

The cribs were made in Canada, Malaysia, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia and Italy.

Consumers are urged to stop using the cribs until the drop-side is locked with the repair kit and to inspect the hardware throughout the crib.

For more information, call Pottery Barn Kids at (877) 804-3847 between 7 a.m. and midnight 7 days a week or visit their web site, where photos of all the cribs can be found along with a form to request a repair kit.
