Johnson and Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare has expanded its recall of its popular over-the-counter drugs Tylenol, Benadryl and Motrin because of a foul odor.

Consumers who bought these lots can contact McNeil for a refund or a coupon. The 21 lots sold in the United States, Fiji, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Tobago and Jamaica.

The drugs have what the company describes as a musty or moldy odor that has been blamed on the breakdown of a chemical on the wooden pallets used to store packing materials for the medicine.

Consumer complaints of the smell and reports of vomiting, diarrhea and other stomach upset symptoms prompted the initial recall in January. More than six million bottles of specific lots of Tylenol Arthritis Pain Formula were also recalled in December for the same reason.

In the latest recall, McNeil says in a statement that "all lots involved in the recall were produced before the Jan. 15, 2010 recall, after which McNeil stopped accepting shipments of materials from its suppliers on that type of pallet."

The certain lots of products recalled in the latest round are:

• Benadryl Allergy Ultratab tablets
• Children's Tylenol Meltaways Bubblegum
• Motrin IB caplet
• Tylenol Extra Strength EZ Tablet
• Tylenol Extra Strength Cool Caplet
• Tylenol Extra Strength Caplet
• Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gelcap
• Tylenol Day & Night value pack
• Tylenol PM caplet
• Tylenol PM geltab
• Tylenol PM Rapid Release gelcap

The product lot numbers can be found on the side of the bottle label. To identify whether you have some of the affected lots, go to McNeil's page which lists the lots in the new recall. You can also call 888-222-6036 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. EST Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
