H.S. graduationDetroit's Justin Bullock must know what it's like to win the lottery. Except for the Renaissance High grad, it's his talent, and not luck, that led to him being offered a total of $1.8 million in scholarships.

The 17-year-old not only was recently awarded a Gates Millennium Scholarship to pay for college, but has other scholarships that will pay for his studies by themselves. Bullock is one of 1,000 Gates Millennium Scholars in 2010. The Gates scholarship is a full-ride for college funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bullock plans to take his Gates scholarship with him to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which costs $53,210 for the 2010-11 academic year for an undergraduate. He plans to major in chemical engineering, although he might choose to enter the school's five-year program that would include both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science.

"I'm thinking of going on to medical school," he told the Detroit News. "You don't have to commit to the five-year program until after your second year. I might end up switching majors."

In addition to the Gates scholarship, Bullock's awards include the Ron Brown Scholarship, worth $40,000 over a four-year period, and the MIT scholarship, worth approximately $47,000 per year. Even without the Gates scholarship, he has more than enough to pay for college.

"When you total the financial aid, the scholarships and grants, it comes to about $1.8 million," Bullock told the News. "The Gates scholarship covers everything the school (MIT) doesn't. So it's like a blank check."

Bullock was definitely deserving of those scholarships and of the Gates scholarship. He has a 4.0 grade point average after earning all A's in four years of high school.l. He scored a 33 on the ACT as a junior.

The Gates scholarship is for minority students low-income students. More than 27,000 low-income students will be helped through a Gates scholarship to get to college by 2016. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation offers many types of Gates scholarships, not just the Gates Millennium Scholarship.
