I was recently having dinner with an old friend, discussing astrology over steamed dumplings. While my friend was skeptical, I insisted I believe in it.

I suggested she check out the only published horoscopes I swear by -- in Elle magazine. They have proved, in my experience, uncannily accurate. The next day I received an e-mail from Susan Miller, the famous astrologist who writes the horoscopes for Elle!

Miller invited me to cover her event, "Susan's Year Ahead 2010," an all-day program raising money for the Red Cross efforts in Haiti. Susan contacted me after running into a mutual friend at a coffee shop who suggested I might want to attend.

The very next morning, I cleared my schedule and I was there, sitting front row with editors and marketers of Elle, there to support their colleague and hang on Susan's every cheery word. (It's impossible to convey in print just how upbeat she is).

"Sometimes you have to go through something [difficult] to get to the good," she said. "It doesn't mean it's a bad year." Miller started her morning talk by assuring that difficult periods are times to shed behaviors and beliefs that aren't working for us.

So when will the U.S. finally "shed" this Great Recession?

Two years ago, astrologists saw that we were moving into a new money system, she says, when Pluto went into Capricorn. The last time this happened, the English created the Stamp Act -- raising taxes on the American colonies, which lead to the Revolutionary War.

Now we're going through another monetary shake-up, but things won't be easier until October 2012. Miller promises it won't be "all bad" until then; it's a time for financial reform. "The planets try to get us to change," she says. And change is never easy.

But with Jupiter in Pisces -- one of the most charitable signs -- it's all falling back on us to help one another. This year is all about community.

And then there's great news: this is an excellent year for reinvention.

When I was gushing over her horoscopes in the magazine to Elle's creative director Joe Zee, he assured me that Miller's Web site AstrologyZone.com has lots more amazing information. I've provided links to each sign on her site with information she went over on Saturday's event. If that's still not enough information, you can get a personalized astrology book from Miller's publisher for around $50 that is specific to your place and time of birth.

Now, a quick note on fashion before we get started. With Jupiter in Pisces, that means fashion is all about sparkling things -- like a sparkling school of fish, which I have been loving. But this summer, with Jupiter in Aries, expect fashion to take a militant turn with shorter haircuts, riding crops, and sportier looks. I shared this news right away with one of my favorite people in fashion, couture designer Sergio Guadarrama of Celestino, an Austin, Texas-born line. "Well, at least that's good news for us," he shrugged about the current sparkling explosion.

Now, here's a slice of what's in store for you in 2010, according to Miller:

Pisces: This is your year! Nobody has had it harder than you and now that's all about to change in a big way. Breathe a huge sigh of relief and expect the blessings to pour. Influential people will be drawn to you -- make sure you're ready with a simple, direct request of what you need.

Aries: Aries likes to be self-employed. This is your year to do it. President Obama will release the capital frozen by the banks this summer. It's a great time to meet with investors. But make sure you ask for more than you need because there will still be a lot of restrictions on any loans and investments. This year people will want to support you. So, go for it! You're sitting pretty in 2010.

Taurus: Join a club -- either online or in your community. This is a great year for friendship--your friends will go above and beyond to help you. And you'll be making new friends. With all this support, this is a time to go after what you truly want in your heart. This is your year.

Gemini: You are coming off of a hard year. But this is your year to stay professional. And in terms of jobs, take nothing but the best. Dont settle. The opportunities in career will soon present themselves in abundance.

Cancer: This is your lucky year when it comes to foreign places and academia. Sound off? Imagine, Susan says, if you're a marketer--then you should market on college campuses and to universities. This is an excellent year to take in and disperse information: travel, start a website, go to graduate school.

Leo: After a rough period, you're finally going to do well with money. Go on a game show with prizes, ask for a loan. This year go after the money you want and deserve.

Virgo: You're coming off of a challenging time in regards to relationships and health. This year, all that is going to flip. After being in an icy tundra, the grass is finally growing again.

Libra: You've been going through a time of meaningful growth, which is always challenging. The lessons you're learning now are making you more practical. They will stay with you for life.

Scorpio: This year, you're winning the cosmic jackpot! You're the most skeptical sign, but don't let that stop you from taking this advice: this is your year for love, so get out there and socialize. This is your most critical year for fun, love, and career. In fact, there's so much abundnace that the universe might even think you're ready to have a baby, so if you don't agree, be protected on that front.

Sagittarius
: This is the best year ever for you and real estate. Whether you're buying or renting for yourself or children, definitely explore real estate this year. If you're looking to buy, make sure you do not settle: this is your year to get your dream home.

Capricorn
: This is your year for all things communication. Get your message out there: write a book, start a radio show. Whatever it is, you're great at enjoying life to the fullest and now you need to get your message and story out there.

Aquarius: It's been a tumultuous time and it will keep up for a while. You have to be brave in asking for what you need.
