Barnes & Noble (BKS) last week laid off an undisclosed number of digital-division employees, including its director of digital content, Mike Ferrari. The bookstore chain "did have some organizational changes" as part of a realignment at BN.com, B&N representative Mary Ellen Keating told Publishers Weekly, which entailed eliminating "a handful of jobs, while adding more in other areas."The action, Keating said, "was really more about making sure we have the right skills and talent in place for an ambitious year ahead." A request for comment was not returned.

B&N wasn't the only bookseller feeling layoff pain. Ingram Content Group, a distributor and wholesaler, laid off 57 employees at its office in La Vergne, Tenn.: the culmination of its consolidation last May of its print and digital publishing services. Job losses were spread across all divisions and account for 3% of the company's total workforce in La Vergne.

"When we announced the reorganization last summer, we began a process to identify a way to eliminate redundancies in management structure and operations to increase efficiencies and reduce costs," a representative told the Tennessean. "It's unfortunate that this happened, but it's a step that Ingram needs to take to ensure they are right-sized and as efficient as possible."
