I like control, especially when it comes to my money and my cell phone service. I just learned about a cell phone company that puts you totally in control of your usage and spending. The company is called Pure TalkUSA and they operate on the GSM network, just like AT&T and T-Mobile.
The way it works is you pay Pure TalkUSA $10 for 101 minutes. If you want to buy another $10-pack of 101 minutes, you can do so online or over the phone. The minutes include local and long distance calls. If you use all your minutes, you cannot receive or make calls, so there are no overage charges. I repeat, there are no overage charges.
Domestic and international texts are 5 cents each, or two texts equal one minute of usage. That's a lot less than I pay for my texts.
You can also sign up for a flex plan that lets you set a dollar limit for your total monthly usage. Pure TalkUSA will charge your credit or debit card in $10 allotments as you use your minutes up to your limit. This eliminates the need to manually buy another $10-pack of 101 minutes. Unused minutes rolls over and never expire.
There is no contract and you can cancel your service with 30 days notice.
So what's the catch?
The phones Pure TalkUSA sells are refurbished and there are only six models to choose from, ranging from free to $80. Not a single one is a smart phone that has Internet-browsing capabilities.
But, you can buy a SIM card from them and plug it into your current phone. Right now Pure TalkUSA has a promotion for a free SIM card that comes with 150 minutes, but it's likely to end in February. So basically, if you have a phone you can try out the service and just pay for the minutes. Very tempting.
Plus, if you sign up right now, you'll get 50 bonus minutes. So $10 will get you 151 minutes, not 101. To sign up you must have a credit or debit card. There is no cancellation or activation fee. If you are not happy, you only have 14-days to return the phone. Visit Pure TalkUSA for more info.
There are a lot of options when it comes to pay-as-you-go cell phone plans. To find reviews of the best ones, check out PrePaidReviews.com. The site is devoted to rating cell phone plans like the one offered at Pure TalkUSA.
The top rated pre-paid plan is from T-Mobile, which has phones starting at $30, plus an activation kit for $7. Minutes are $10 for 30 minutes, $25 for 130, or as low as $100 for 1,000. Texts are 5 cents to 10 cents. Hmm, seems like Pure TalkUSA is still a better deal.
AT&T's pre-paid plans start at 15 cents a minute and get as low as 10 cents, depending on how many you buy. AT&T also has pay-as-you-go plans with per-minute charges and per-day charges. There are a lot of options so figure out your usage patterns to find the best plan.
