Ford posts surprise $1 billion profit, zooms past expectations

Ford (F), the only Detroit automaker to dodge direct government aid and bankruptcy court, surprised investors with net income of nearly $1 billion in the third quarter and forecast a "solidly profitable" 2011.The automaker said Monday earnings were fueled by U.S. market share gains, cost cuts and the Cash for Clunkers program, which drew flocks of buyers to showrooms this summer. Ford's shares rose 68 cents, or 9.8 percent, to $7.68 in morning trading.
The latest results signal that Ford's turnaround is on more solid ground. The company lost more than $14.6 billion last year and hasn't posted a full-year profit since 2005. While it made a profit in the second quarter, that was mainly due to debt reductions that cut its interest payments.
Ford, based in Dearborn, Mich., reported third-quarter net income of $997 million, or 29 cents per share. Its profit forecast for 2011 was a step above previous guidance of break-even or better for the year.
Ford's key North American car and truck division posted a pretax profit of $357 million, the division's first quarter in the black since early 2005. Ford cited higher pricing, lower material costs and increased market share for the improvement.
Excluding one-time items, Ford earned 26 cents per share, blowing away analysts' expectations of a loss of 12 cents.
The earnings came despite an $800 million revenue drop. But Ford said it cut costs by $1 billion during the quarter, accomplished through layoffs in North America and Europe, reduced pension and retiree health care costs and improvements in productivity and product development.
Chief financial officer Lewis Booth said the company took in $1.3 billion more than it spent in the quarter, an improvement over its $1 billion cash burn in the second quarter.
"That's a huge deal," Booth said.
Ford's plan to create demand and get better prices for its products, coupled with cost cuts, gave the company confidence that it will make money in 2011, Booth said.
But Ford still faces obstacles in its turnaround. Last week, workers overwhelmingly rejected an agreement with the United Auto Workers that would have brought Ford's labor costs in line with rivals General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC. Workers objected to clauses limiting their right to strike and freezing entry-level wages, and felt the company was healthy enough and didn't need further concessions.
The rejected deal also would have changed rules so skilled tradesmen such as electricians and pipefitters work in teams and perform more than one task.
Rejection of the deal isn't likely to place Ford at an immediate cost disadvantage to its crosstown rivals because savings from the concessions are longer-term, said Gary Chaison, a professor of labor relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Neither the company nor the UAW has released any cost savings numbers.
The third-quarter profit makes it extremely unlikely that the company will push to head back to the bargaining table before the current UAW contract expires in the fall of 2011, and union leaders also are unlikely to take another deal to the membership, Chaison said.
"I think the company has no credibility asking for concessions now, and I think the leadership is quite embarrased for making a case for concessions," he said.
Chaison said Ford could make some noise about moving new vehicle production to Canada, where unionized workers on Sunday approved a package of concessions, but it's more likely that Ford will live with the current contract until 2011.
The other area where Ford has a cost disadvantage is debt. Ford reported $26.9 billion in debt, up $800 million from the second quarter.
The company avoided the same fate as rivals Chrysler and GM by mortgaging its factories and even the familiar blue oval logo to borrow $23.5 billion before credit markets froze last year.
Ford didn't quantify the impact of Cash for Clunkers, which offered buyers rebates to trade in their vehicles. The program helped Ford cut costly incentives and raise production.
It also won buyers; the fuel-efficient Ford Focus sedan and Ford Escape, a small SUV, were among the top five sellers under clunkers. Ford sales climbed 17 percent in August thanks to the program.
Ford's revenue fell $800 million for the quarter, to $30.9 billion, due mainly to its financial services arm, Ford Motor Credit, making fewer loans.
But the division still posted a pretax profit of $677 million, and revenue from auto operations rose slightly to $27.9 billion.
Ford also has benefited from consumer goodwill after it declined government bailout money and didn't go into bankruptcy over the summer as GM and Chrysler did. Ford grabbed sales from its rivals, posting the largest increase in market share of any automaker in September. Ford expects an overall gain in U.S. market share in 2009, a feat it hasn't accomplished since 1995.

That's how Ford and the other multinationals work, in times of low demand, cut the overhead while they can and then leave the country when they get a better deal. They leverage one economy against another and lower your wages. Canada has single payer health care for all, which Ford wouldn't have to pay for, you know the very thing the neocon Republicans and the corporate Democrats say would be socialism. This only states the obvious that our elected representatives are the best paid politicians money can buy. It's time for public funded elections and make it illegal for them to take money from anyone.

Are you people understanding this whole story? Not really. Although Ford had a profit of $1billion; it also had $800 million in less revenue. The only reason Ford had a profit is because they CUT COSTS !!!! LAYOFFS did it; along with union concessions. Wake up!! With continued job losses, all these companies are showing LOWER revenues. Profit is only part of the story. Continued lower revenues means consumers are not spending. Lower spending means fewer jobs.....and on and on and on.

GM and Chrysler will be back for more taxpayer money, but this time they should not get one red cent. Let them go bankrupt the right way. Sell off their assets and vanish. I don't think Ford would be interested in buying the junk ineups and equipment from GM or Chrysler anyway. Kudos to Ford.

Like all stimulus dollars, how long can we taxpayers keep paying for the false cocaine high that we see happening now. What happens to these companies when we take away their cocaine stimulus cash? All of the Third Quarter earnings were falsely better for the same reason. Will we ever stop providing billions or will our American companies become addicted to Government welfare forever. I fear the latter.

Saul - you couldn't be more wrong. If it weren't for Obama creating the Cash for Clunkers program, Ford would not have created as much profit as they did. Obama didn't have everything to do with their profit, but he did play a huge part in it. So...ultimately, he did have some control in Ford's profit. Get your facts straight. Ford has always been great and they do deserve some light shined on them. Way to go Ford! Keep it up.

During my four wheeled life I have owned cars ranging from Chevrolet to Mercedes Benz. In among them were various Fords, all of which excelled in performance, lack of problems and bang for the buck. I found the so called high end brands to be far less reliable to own. I now own two Fords, (an Edge being the youngest), both reliable, well made and still excellent value. This company deserves to prosper so America, back them up and buy their excellent vehicles.

Made up my mind after I saw all the random give away our new government was doing and decided I made a mistake last November. Bailout was a the last straw. Bought a new Ford Escape two months ago instead of a Government Motors (GM) car. Will stay away from GM and Chrysler even if they are giving those things away. It would only encourage our government to try that crap again at my expense. My first Ford, and won't be my last.

Not everyone hates the Unions Fiwiki, just people who don't educate themselves on the situation before posting bs! The union voted to accept two concessions earlier this year and last year that reduced pay and entitlements. Ford promised to reinstate several concessions to the union six months ago, but has failed to do that dispite making 1 billion in profit this quarter and having the highest paid and most reduntant executive staffing of any automaker. Ford should treat the blue collar workers with respect and make the cuts in executive pay and perks instead of asking for three major concessions from labor without keeping their word. You should do some research before blasting an entire work force of professionals! Go USA go UNION buy American!

Unions will negate any profits- they will drag Ford AND THEIR JOBS into the gutter- Exactly like they did to the other companies....WHY should their jobs warrant extravagant benefits- if they don't like where or How they work then Leave! EX: Let's see- 1 electrican takes 4 hours to do a job- 2 would take 1.5 or Less hours- saving 1+ hour of time on the clock.....UNIONS TELL a company NO WAY- do it OUR WAY or NO WAY.....I live in a FORD producing State and daily see this union stanglehold over companies -especially Ford and GE.......These workers have some of the best paying jobs here and Beyond best benefits- they are unbelieveably GREEDY....and whenever I see stike signs I CHEER - bring in workers who will gladly do the job at a fair wage .....if these Idiots didn't pay union Dues rheir paycheck would GROW....unions are greedy abominations that have overstepped all boundaries
