Stocks gave up most of their early gains in light Columbus Day trading, but still managed to close mostly higher Monday.

The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) came within 68 points of the psychologically key 10,000 level before cooling off to close at 9,886, up 21 points or 0.2 percent. The broader S&P 500 ($INX) added 5 points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,076, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ($COMPX) was unchanged at 2,139.
