The blue-chip Dow rose 38 points, or 0.4 percent, to 9,825 Friday, its highest close in more than a year. The broader S&P 500 ($INX) added two points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,067, while the the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite ($COMPX) gained seven points, or 0.3 percent, to close at 2,131.
Major leaders included Dow component International Business Machines (IBM), which rose three percent, and WellPoint (WLP), which tacked on 3.6 percent. Both stocks got a lift from favorable analysts' reports.
