Avis Budget says smoking in its rental cars will set you back a whopping $250
Filed under: Company News, Avis Budget Group, Enterprise Products Partners
Nonsmokers who travel often find themselves frustrated once they unlock the car they've just rented at the airport. After a few hours of lounges, gates, and airborne cabins mercifully free of secondhand smoke, travelers slide behind the wheel and wonder how nobody at the rental agency has noticed that the interior smells like a Las Vegas casino.Fans of fresh-smelling car interiors, rejoice: Two of the biggest players in the rental-car business are banning smoking in their fleets, starting next month, and will impose a $250 cleaning fee for anyone who chooses to light up in that freshly scrubbed Ford Fusion or Dodge Caravan.
But how will it be enforced? What prevents a rental customer from simply driving around with the windows wide open while puffing away like the Marlboro Man? Avis Budget says it's implementing inspection procedures to determine tobacco odor or residue, whose presence will result in the cleaning fee. It takes considerably longer to clean a car when you must remove tobacco smells or film, Avis Budget says, and the car must be pulled from the fleet until it smells good.
Other rental-car companies seek to limit smoking but don't ban it outright. Enterprise GP Holdings (EPE), which operates Enterprise, Alamo and National, restricts smoking at many locations.
Naturally, pro-smoking groups are not amused. Gary Nolan of the Smoker's Club told USA Today, "It's disappointing, but it's their private property." Nolan, a smoker and a Budget Rent A Car loyalist, says Avis Budget has lost his business.

Guess what all you nonsmoking people. When we quit they'll just tax the hell out of something else.. So while it's perfectly ok for people to get drunk off their ass. I have never run over a person because I was smoking a cigarette. I have the right to kill myself anyway I see fit. I'll pay the 250 just to piss off one of you. As a point of fact..I may just piss in the next car I rent.. That seems to be free. There you have it.. I can piss in a rental car, but I can't smoke in one because one of you nonsmoking crybabies will have to deal with it. Enjoy the soggy seat a$$hole!

some people smoke, some people do heroin, some people like sex..... SO WHAT? did you think about it? maybe you can smell smoke in the car after someone "lit up" but can you smell if they just had sex on the front seat of the car - or whatever???? You are renting a car. You are sleeping in a bed that how many other people have slept in let alone the normal bugs and bacteria that live in a mattress?? Do you bring your own sheets with you every time you stay at a hotel??? (and you should) Have cars that are "smoke free" - if that will make you happy. Are you assured of not contracting something more serious than an offense to your nasal passages? Be real

Lisa, perhaps the companies looked at the profit they make off of smokers, and then subtracted the cost in loss of revenue from vehicles out of service for many days, and the cost of extensive cleaning and figured that they were losing money?
So I doubt they'll miss your business if you're one of their customers who willfully damaged their property, in spite of the fact that the vehicle was rented to you as a non-smoking vehicle. If you don't value their service or their property, then perhaps they don't value you any longer.

Only a jerk with a baby factory for a wife would rent a minvan anyway. Leave the brats at home and make the rest of us happier. Notice they only put the restrictions on the cheap "family" cars. PS: I don't smoke, just hate kids.

David, I rent minivans quite often and I have dogs..lol! I show dogs, and when I need a vehicle for a big road trip that can hold the dog crates and my equipment, I'll rent a minivan. Same for my friend who has a band. Minivans have a lot more cargo space than SUV's, and get better mileage, not to mention are WAY easier to park.
So, not all minivan renters are brood mares with 20 zillion rug rats. Just sayin' :-)

For all of you who are in favor of abortion, David, here, is a good argument for your side.

Well I am glad someone said it. I don't agree with you about minivans, however I am tired of kids. I have to rent a car when I travel once a month for work. I am tired of getting into a car that smells of sour milk, vomit, and many other smell that careless parents overlook because it isn't their car. Give me a car that smells of smoke, and a febreze air freshner and I'll take it over a car that has had children in it. I also think it is funny, I rent with Budget, and never find there cars to be clean. The last car I rented had soda spilt all over the back seat.

I couldn't agree more. Everyone is banning smoking everywhere. But why aren't they banning kids?? Ever have to sit next to a screaming kid on an airplane?? How about going to a restaurant and having a booth next to one with a baby with a smelly dirty diaper, and the parents are too busy eating to go change the baby?? Or when they let their brats climb all over the top of the booth and do nothing.
I once was riding my bike, ON THE BIKE LANE, in a park when some child came out of nowhere, on a big wheel, right in front of me... I slammed on the brake , flipped over the handlebars right into the pavement. When I found the father, who was far off, not watching his kid, he didn't apologize and seemed indifferent to the fact that I took a fall trying to avoid his kid... I should have just run right over the brat and not ended up with a sprained wrist.
KIDS SUCK.

I'm really happy they are finally stopping smoking in vehicles, but not for the same reason you are. "Women are not baby factories and Children only 'suck' when given a bottle or the natural!" Your attitude really sucks though!

And for Mark to consider --- Don't accept one in that condition. There's no guarantee that the car will actually be cleaned even if someone pays the $250.00. So you need to see if it passes the sniff test before signing it out.

They've got my business! Nothing worse than a filthy smelling car.
The only way to guarantee that smokers don't ruin property is to hit them in their wallet.
Smokers don't care about rules, nor cleanliness nor do they care about littering nor do they care about other people. They throw their filthy butts all over the streets and grounds. They blow their filthy smoke into non-smokers faces. They smoke in non-smoking rooms, non-smoking cruise ship cabins and make everyone's life miserable. If they want to smoke, they should stay in their own homes and enjoy their filth.
