The power of free: It's hard out there for a porn star

Times are tough. but when Savannah Stern, the star of Naughty Office 12, Nylons 4 and at least 350 more adult movies, has to trade in her Mercedes for her parents' old Trailblazer you know the porn industry has experienced a little shrinkage.

The Los Angeles Times followed Savannah around to her $300 cocktail job and a 35th anniversary celebration for Hustler and found out that she's not the only porn star who's struggling to get by.

Surprisingly the culprit in the pornography downturn isn't the recession. Even though it has played a role in the adult entertainment industry's woes, it's far from the leading lady.

The trouble with porn these days is that there's too much free content. It turns out the one thing that can hurt the porn industry is its core audience's participation. Thanks to an abundance of cheap high quality video equipment, the viewers are becoming the creators.

The abundance of free sites and free content has begun to take its toll on professionals like Stern. Over the past year, like many American workers, she's found her workweek cut to fewer days and also found that the going rate for her services had $300 chopped off of it.

And, just like the high paid Wall Street professionals who now work for half the pay at less prestigious positions across the country, top notch porn stars are finding themselves making less money in "unusual" positions.

But don't continue to think that the porn industry is a heartless machine that chews up young ladies and spits them out. Matt Morningwood (yes, really), referencing a $700 paycut for "unusual" activities, told the Times that, "Nowadays some of the top-tier models will do that scene for us and you're looking at maybe $1,800. I'm happy for the production, but I feel bad for exploiting the girls' situation."

Don't go worrying your little heads over the future of porn stars. The smart ones have taken a lesson from corporate America and are diversifying, milking their brand and riding out the changing marketplace. Something tells me the industry will find a way to survive no matter what obstacles it encounters.
