Stocks slide ahead of Fed statement on rates, economy

The Federal Reserve Board almost certainly won't announce an interest-rate hike at the end of their two-day meeting tomorrow. But, in their own opaque way, give a glimpse of their view of the state of the economy, and that apparently is making investors a bit nervous. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 97 points, or 1 percent, to 9,241 ahead of the Fed's statement.

Financial stocks, including Bank of America (BAC), JPMorgan Chase (JPM) and American Express (AXP) led stocks lower. Of the Dow's 30 component stocks, only Alcoa (AA), Dupont (DD), 3M (MMM) and Wal-Mart (WMT) rose.
