Apple (AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs is set to return to the company he founded, possibly at its software developers' conference Monday. People familiar with Apple told the Wall Street Journal that Jobs will return this month from the medical leave he has been on since January. The company hasn't provided updates on his health since.
The iPod and computer maker may have leaked this information ahead of the company's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco next week because Jobs could be there to unveil the iPhone 3.0.
Some Apple directors were updated weekly on Jobs' medical condition. "He was one real sick guy," according to a person familiar with Jobs' health, the story said. "Fundamentally he was starving to death over a nine-month period. He couldn't digest protein." Jobs "took corrective action,'' the person said.
Jobs has been to Apple's headquarters since January, the Journal reported. Two sources said Apple is trying to coordinate his return with a product launch or public event. Apple has said its marketing chief, Philip Schiller, will give Monday's keynote address. In the past, Jobs has given that presentation.
The expected new iPhone, which will have added processing power and features such as video editing, is ready to be shown next week, a source who has seen it told the newspaper. Analysts expect the new version of the iPhone will be ready for sale this month or next.
DailyFinace's sister site, TUAW, suggested Thursday the new iPhone may be called iPhone Video and that it received an anonymous tip stating that AT&T's support website will be updated with "iPhone Video" as one of the model choices when choosing Apple as the phone manufacturer.
