Oprah, Ashton Kutcher and even CNN hosts may have to pause Friday and Monday while Twitter repairs itself.
Friday at 5 pm and Monday, May 11, at 9 am New York time, for an hour each day, Twitter may be putting Tweets on hold.
Twitter is calling it a "significant database upgrade" that will greatly increase system performance," which could stir some anger in Twitterville as Tweets may come to a halt.
How will Twitter-ers tell the world what's going on? For those couple of hours, we'll likely have to resort to e-mails, instant messages and Facebook.
Typically, Twitter would make such repairs in the wee hours. This time, they are doing it while the sun shines because of the "extent of the changes," the company wrote.
In the past, a giant pale-blue whale would be seen on Twitter's main page when maintenance problems or service issues occurred. During those times, Tweets cannot be sent.
Twitter has this message on the home pages of its members today: "We will have one hour of planned maintenance Friday at 2 p.m. Pacific" [time].
Here's what Twitter posted on its status page, for those who want to read the explanation: "We're taking these maintenance windows earlier in the day because of the extent of the changes involved. We want to make sure that we are able to respond quickly and efficiently to any issues that may arise from the work being performed."
Will Tweeting be down for both hour-long chunks each day? Could the disruption go on for longer than the planned hour? Will Twitter hold updates during the outage? Will the Twitter page look different after these changes?
Twitter's media relations folks could not be reached for e-mail or telephone comment. Tweets to Twitter co-founders Evan Williams and Biz Stone have not been returned.
In the meantime, me, you, Oprah and Ashton may get some time off from Tweeting. Enjoy.
UPDATE: I heard back from Twitter spokeswoman, who e-mailed regarding Twitter users:
1. They will not be able to Tweet.
2. They will see a maintenance window.
