As is often the case, hard data often lays media spin to waste. The current list of best selling cars for 2009 is a prime example of this. Current consumer purchasing trends in motor vehicles make clear that the green movement media is lying to you about what people really want to buy and drive. For those armchair media anchor people, who claim that America's auto industry is failing because it doesn't understand what people really want, I hereby dedicate the following list to them. The number one vehicle purchased in the United States thus far in 2009, is none other than Ford's F150 pick-up truck. Although F-150 sales are off a little over 39% year on year, people still want them. Ford Motor Co has moved over 25,000 units so far this year.
Holding a close second place on the 2009 best sellers list is Chevrolet's Silverado pick-up truck. Sales of these trucks are off by a little over 33% year on year, but Chevrolet has moved nearly 24,000 of these units thus far in 2009.
Not surprisingly, the Dodge Ram pick-up truck is holding third place on the 2009 best sellers list. Unit sales of Ram trucks has declined over 35% year on year, with Dodge moving almost 13,000 of these units to this point in 2009.
Fourth place: Chevrolet Malibu. 34% year on year decline with 9,312 units sold.
Fifth: Ford Escape SUV. Only 25.3% sales decline year on year with 8,360 units sold.
Sixth: Ford Fusion. A mere 11.2% sales decline year on year at 8,152 units sold.
Seventh: GMC Sierra pick-up truck, a bit over 39% decline year on year with 8,020 units sold.
Eighth: Ford Focus. 33% year on year decline at 7,769 units sold.
Ninth: Chevrolet Impala. Whopping 61.8% year on year decline with 7,062 units sold.
Tenth: Jeep Wrangler. Incredible 66% sales decline year on year at 6,362 units sold.
It is quite clear that America's love affair with pick-up trucks has not faltered. Yes, total unit sales have declined severely, but that's an economic issue, not a matter of consumer trending. As the facts have it, pick-up trucks hold four of the top ten unit sales positions on this list. Most notably, the top three spots are held by trucks. Clearly, Ford Motor Company is doing something right. Ford is holding four of the top ten selling positions, including the number one spot. A person has to wonder if Ford's "go it alone" business stance figures into the company's strong sales ranking.
In conclusion, I must say that I find it particularly satisfying that four trucks and two SUVs are holding six of the top ten positions in American vehicle sales rankings. For those funny people who claim that the auto industry doesn't know what we want, I submit to them that the hard numbers just don't lie.
